Mapping databases vary widely in their accuracy, availability and continuity. Lack of records for older underground facilities and the chaos of keeping up with new construction are two concerns that clients constantly battle.
The accuracy of maps and databases has become an integral part of day-to-day operation and management at First Alert Locating. When a consumer's service becomes interrupted due to an incident, the consequences for the provider can be costly. Therefore, it is critical that these records remain as accurate and current as possible.
Due to recent strides in technology a quick, efficient and cost-effective way of mapping both above and underground facilities has been developed and fine-tuned.
A combination of this technology and First Alert's Radio-detection locating equipment allows us to precisely locate a buried utility, measure its depth and obtain a GPS position simultaneously. The information can then be exported by various methods and formats to allow for optimum flexibility in the organization and maintenance of clients' databases.
In 2006, First Alert utilized this equipment in a field south of Grande Prairie. We were able to use the information collected to develop an effective system to address our client's various needs, whether it was producing a wall map or reporting on unserviceable risers. Upgrades to this service are continually expanding due solely to our experience and knowledge of the equipment.
